How to Write a Blog Post: For Reluctant Writers

The essential step to getting organic traffic for your home business affiliate website is to write blog posts. You can network all you like. You can buy traffic for your funnel. But in the end your customers want to see a website. And content gives your website credibility. So, you have to write articles, or blog posts. Until the cows come home. I read one Affiliate Marketer write that he spent 6 months writing content. And the next 6 months drip feeding that content and networking. The point I’m making is, you need content.

Anyone can do this

But what if you are a reluctant writer? What if your English writing skills aren’t the best. Well, you’re in luck. Blog posts don’t have to be manifestos. They aren’t academic essays. This means they should be simple and easy to understand. They need to be read and understand by just about anyone, which means their language has to be simple and easy to understand.

This means just about ANYONE can write a blog post. ANYONE. Use ‘Wealth of Writing’ a evidence of this.

This article will break a blog post down for you and show you how to write one your-self.

Step 1 – Brainstorm Your Content

Your first step is to make a list with four items on it. That’s it. Four.

Can you do that? Yes, you can. You need to decide o a topic for your article and three ideas that support that topic.

Here is what your list could look like.

  1. Topic
  2. Point 1
  3. Point 2
  4. Point 3

Let me fill in the list for you for an example.

  1. Topic – Skipping
  2. Point 1 – Endurance
  3. Point 2 – Weight Loss
  4. Point 3 – Co-ordination

This brainstorming session involved you writing down 4-5 words. Ideally you will have chosen an affiliate niche where you can do this sort of activity all day long. If this isn’t the case you may need to reconsider your chosen niche.

Now we are going to turn this brainstormed list into four paragraphs. This will be our article.

Step 2 – The Topic and Thesis.

Right! It’s time to turn your topic into a thesis. Don’t worry, ‘thesis’ is just an academic term for argument. In particular a mother argument that your whole article is about. Let’s take the topic of skipping again and work with that. You need to take Skipping and turn it into a statement. A statement you can argue for. Argue can be a strong word for some people. There will be no yelling. Think of it as an ‘opinion’.

Eg – Skipping –> Skipping is good for you

Done, except that is boring. How about:

Skipping –> Skipping is good for you –> Skipping: Your secret weapon for health

That’s better.

Now you need to explain to me why I should care. Set your-self a target of 3-5 sentences in total. Here are some things you could write a sentence on:

  • What is skipping.
  • History of skipping
  • Who likes to skip
  • What can I learn from this article (list points 2,3,4 in this sentence)

Example?

Skipping can be your secret weapon for health.

Skipping is the article of swinging a rope over your head and jumping it continuously for a period of time.

Skipping has been popular for 150 years since it’s invention during the industrial revolution.

Lots of people like to skip including school children and professional boxers.

By the end of this article you will learn how skipping can improve your endurance, help with weight-loss, and improve your co-ordination.

Of course in a paragraph it will look a lot better:

Easy right?

Step 3 – Your Supporting Points or Arguments

You already have your supporting ideas from your original list. Excellent. All you have to do is explain them one by one. Let’s start with Endurance.

Assume your reader has no idea about fitness at all and has never jumped rope. You really need to break it down for them. Explain, with examples, how skipping can build their endurance. On a base level that is all you have to do. But there are some additional tools available for you to pad out your paragraph. Try to only use one per supporting argument. Here’s a list for you:

  • Anecdote – a story related to your topic
  • Statistic – a number related to your topic
  • Quote –¬† An important, relevant person’s words about the topic
  • Historical Event – related to your topic

In this situation I use a formula called PEEETE. PEEETE will help you write every blog post paragrapgh you’ll ever need. PEEETE stands for Point, Explain, Example, Explain, Tool, Explain. Note that everything needs to be explained. Your reader is using your article as an educational resource so really break it down for them. Again, EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE EXPLAINED.

An example

Point – Skipping will increase your endurance.

Explain – You are basically running and jumping on the spot so your muscles are constantly moving and your heart working hard to support them.

Example – Endurance is increased when you can do an activity for longer.

Explain – Skipping helps you exercise your body and heart so that they can work longer and harder next time you skip.

Tool – Ten minutes skipping is the equivalent of running a mile.

Explain – This means skipping is one of the most effective endurance activities you can do, along with cross-country skiing and swimming.

in a paragraph …

Some Additional Tips and Hints for Reluctant Writers

  • Use speech to text software on your phone or PC if you can’t type.
  • Set up up a sheet for yourself to fill in for your articles to save time.
  • Use flow charts or diagrams if visual pictures help you
  • Break down your article into paragraphs and your paragraphs into sentences.

A Final Point and An Analogy

I have tried to break down an affiliate blog post down to its most basic elements in this article. In time this will become second nature and you will want to write more or change the structure i have given you. This is normal and to be expected.

Think of it in basketball terms. I’ve just shown you have to do a chest pass. But there are other basic passes you should also learn like the bounce pass and the overhead pass. Once you have mastered them and made them your own you might try an alley-oop. Check out this post for other types of passes, I mean articles.

My point is, you have to start somewhere and hopefully list guide gives you a starting point. Good luck.
